At 14,411 feet, Mount Rainier is a formidable impediment to eastward-flowing winter storms. Even in summer when surrounding lowlands are enjoying sunshine, Mount Rainier’s slopes are often obscured by clouds, fog, and mist. Winter storms bring a staggering volume of rain to lower elevations while world record snow levels accumulate at higher elevations. Paradise receives an average annual snowfall of 60 inches, however in the winter of 1971-72, a record 1,122 inches was recorded.
