The fact that the mountain lion was once the most widely distributed mammal in the Western Hemisphere probably accounts for the number of name it is known by. Variously known as cougar, puma, panther, and catamount, weighing up to 200 lbs. and reaching lengths up to 9 feet (including its long tail), this great cat once ranged from the Yukon to the tip of South America and from the east coast to the west. Extremely secretive and fiercely independent, the mountain lion may roam 20 miles in a single night in search of prey. Capable of leaping 20 feet in a single bound it will challenge prey as large as deer and elk.
