“Mesa Verde lies in southwestern Colorado, where the climate is a balance of extremes. Temperatures swing widely in the course of a day and can reach freezing any night of the year. Intense sun heats the air quickly in daytime but with darkness the temperature may plunge thirty degrees or more before dawn. About half of the region’s scant twenty inches of annual precipitation comes from summer thundershowers, most of the rest in winter snowstorms.”
